Cortney Cassidy interviews Maxwell Loren Holyoke-Hirsch
Tell me about your family, how have they influenced you?

My parents are both very amazing artist of substance and intrigue. Both photographers, painters and musicians, business owners, teachers. Prophets of expression and thought. They have influenced me greatly and always blow my mind with their work and views on the world and life. You’ll see them soon.

Who is the one artist that has had the most impact on you?

Picasso

Your artworks are heavy with storylines, where do these narratives come from?

Sometimes they come from varied emotions and fits of rage. Othertimes from a small portion of my brain that likes to organize, tidy up and keep shit neat.

What are your views on commissioned work versus personal fine art since you deal in both fields?

I enjoy both very much, I am trying to blur the lines between the two.

Tell me about your usage of the color red, is there a particular significance to it?

Red is a powerful color to use, I like to feel powerful.

And now in your new works you seem to be exploring more playful color schemes, are you setting a new mood for your new works?

I am having more fun using color and that’s coming across in the works. I am introducing new ideas and finding out more about the world and myself. Settings are blurred with moods paint and spit.

Speaking of new works, what’s in store for your next solo show?

My first body of paintings and wood cuts, a few hundred other things. Lots of energy.

What are your personal theories/thoughts on the contemporary art world? Where its heading, how its been, or how you would like it to be? Do you express these ideals through your art?

I enjoy art being made today, there is a lot, a lot to look at and take in and feel. It’s easier now more then ever for good art to be seen and shared worldwide, so the contemporary art world is vast and exciting and heading in all directions at once. There is a similar chaos in my work at times.
